There are hundreds if not thousands of people you’ll meet through your lifetime. Some come and go. Others stay and watch you grow and some support and help you. I met Sonya around the Freo traps and for me, Sonya was a helper, a giver. A kind person.

She was fun and I enjoyed how she thought. She held her own and her easy going personality was unique. An incredible generous person and always sort to offer a hand. I remember she let some travelling back packers stay down stairs that she had just met and they made a little urban camp next to her vegetable garden. They were young boys and I loved suddenly meeting them and hearing their stories. Eventually she let me have a studio in her South Street warehouse for about 5 years. Saw her a lot there, where we talked and caught up about all the things life seems to throw at you.

What I liked the most is when she’d call me to ask for some help with things. It was a nice feeling to be able to help her back.

This painting is her story from my eyes and I’ll remember her with joy.
